Glossary
The following is a glossary for all the medical terms used within the website, in alphabetical order:
Abdominal cavity
The space within the belly that contains organs, such as the stomach, intestines, and many others.
Abscess
A pocket of infection filled with pus, sometimes caused by a ruptured appendix
Appendicitis
A medical concern where the appendix gets swollen and inflamed, often a medical emergency.
Carpal tunnel
A narrow space where the median nerve passes through.
Cornea
The clear outer layer of the eye that helps focus on light.
Incision
A surgical cut made using special tools (such as a scalpel), to access internal parts of the body.
Intraocular lens (IOL)
A clear artificial lend used during cataract surgery to replace previous natural lens
Laparoscope
A surgical tool that is in the shape of a thin tube with a camera, often for less invasive surgeries.
Lens capsule
The part of the eyes that holds the inner lens in place.
Local Anesthetic
A medicine used to numb a specific targeted area of the body during operations.
Median nerve
A nerve in the arm and hand that allows for movement in the thumb and fingers.
Sedative
Medicine that allows patients to swiftly go unconscious and relax during procedures.
Surgical staples
Metal clips used to close surgical cuts.
Sutures
Special threads used in surgical operations to tie off or close body tissues during (or after) surgery.
Ultrasound probe
A tool that sends ultrasound waves used to break up tissue.
Vacuum probe
A tool that picks up broken tissue.
